Gigantic Icebergs
Year round gigantic icebergs - some raising 100 meters above sea
level - are stranded right outside the town. Anybody visiting Ilulissat
truly understands why this town is named: "Town of the Icebergs".
A Modern Arctic Town
Ilulissat is located 300 kilometers north of the Polar Circle and
is today the biggest and most modern town in the Disko Bay Area. The town
offers all modern facilities, such as airport, good hotels, cafés and
supermarkets - still man is outnumbered by the huskies.
Huskies
As soon as the snow and ice conditions make it possible, the
Greenland Huskies end their summer vacation and have to go to work. The
huskies have for centuries been (and still are) the most important means of
transportation when traveling to the villages or when the local hunters go
fishing on the frozen fjords. Therefore arriving passengers often look out
the window of the aircraft and are met by a sight which seems to be a
totally different world: The locals traveling by dog sled next to the
airport runway.
Isolated Settlements
A totally different world is found in the small and isolated
settlements only a few hours by dog sledge or boat from Ilulissat, where the
local population still is totally depending upon fishing and hunting.
Ilulissat Seasons
The location north of the Polar Circle does of course mean true
arctic climate with very low winter temperatures - especially from December
to March. But Ilulissat is also located in the Disko Bay where a part of the
Gulf Stream makes it unpredictable if the sea will freeze or not - iceberg
cruises by boat might be possible throughout the winter; if not, we will
approach the icebergs by dog sled.
The Long Arctic Night
The northerly location also makes it possible to experience the
Polar Night, when the sun does not rise above the horizon, between early
December and late January.
Arctic Fur Clothing
Specially during the dark season or when traveling by dog sled to
the villages or to the fishing grounds the traveler needs special clothing -
traditional fur anoraks, trousers and arctic boots are of course possible to
rent.
Hotel Arctic
Hotel Arctic is located at the outskirts of the
town with the most beautiful view towards the fjord and the gigantic
Icebergs.
Hotel
Kangerlussuaq
The comfortable tourist class Hotel Kangerlussuaq offers nice
rooms with private facilities, mini bar, TV and phone. The hotel also offers
a cafeteria, a restaurant and a bar. Furthermore the hotel has taken over
the former US-airbase facilities in Kangerlussuaq, which means that an
indoor swimming pool, fitness area, bowling alley and a night club are open
for hotel guests.
The Igloo Hotel
The Igloo has been used by the Eskimos for centuries when they
were traveling during winter. In Kangerlussuaq - every year in November - we
build the Igloo Village Hotel, where the visitor can have the experience of
staying overnight in a real igloo.
Musk Oxen and Reindeer
A stop in Kangerlussuaq makes it possible also to experience
Arctic wild life such as Musk Oxen and Reindeer - and the unique experience
of staying overnight in an Igloo.
