ICE HOTEL SWEDEN
The Ice Chapel
This project was first begun on Saturday
the 28th of March, 1992. The shape and the size have undergone some
changes since then.
The Ice Chapel of today is what it is thanks to Jukkasjärvi snow, and
the ice supplied by the Torne River. The finished chapel is formally
handed over to Jukkasjärvi parish during the traditional Christmas
service and will be used for church services, christenings and weddings
until mid-April.
This temporary structure, the Ice Chapel,
will gradually melt away during April and May, and the water will
eventually return to the Torne River, thereby completing the cycle. The
life span of this chapel is but a blinking of an eye in comparison with
the old Jukkasjärvi church which was built over 300 years ago, in 1607.
The idea behind the Ice Chapel is that it
should provide a meeting place for those who are visiting the area. It
is in some ways quite separate from Jukkasjärvi Church. They each have
their own important role to play.
If you would like to know more about the Ice Chapel, or if you would
like to book it for a wedding or a christening, please get in touch with
Jan-Erik Johansson, the vicar.
