TOUR DESCRIPTION:
The tour is challenging, recommended only for very experienced riders with
good map reading skills. Start outside Berlin as you wind
yourself through Germany, by ferry to Denmark and through Danish Islands
and Countryside into Copenhagen. Overnight stays in 3 and 4 star hotels
with breakfast daily.
Day 1 ORANIENBURG
(GERMANY)
Arrival to Oranienburg during the day. The town is 25 miles north of
Berlin from where you can catch a local train. The main attraction in
Oranienburg is the baroque palace from 1651, built by the Prince Elector
Friedrich Wilhem 1 as a present to his first wife. The palace has been
restored and parts of it are open to the public. If you want to learn more
about the dark period of German history you can also visit the museum
Sachsenhausen, a former Nazi concentration camp.
Day 2 ORANIENBURG -
DANNENWALDE or FURSTENBERG 40 miles
Along the Oder Havel canal to Liebenwalde. A quiet day through forest and
further along the river Havel to Zehdenick. Overnight stay in Dannenwalde
or Fürstenberg.
Day 3 DANNENWALDE or
FURSTENBERG - NEUSTRELITZ 35 miles
The route continues north to Neustrelitz, the main town of the area and
the residence of the Duke of Mecklenburg - Strelitz. He built a complete
town in 1733 with a castle, gardens, theatre, church and orange groves.
The castle was later destroyed. But the church still exists and the
gardens and orange groves are newly restored.
Day 4 NEUSTRELITZ -
WAREN 35 miles
You are now in the famous Lake District and will bike through the Müritz
National Park. If you are lucky, you might see an eagle! Overnight in the
town Waren, located at the lake with lots of atmosphere and holiday
feeling.
Day 5 WAREN - KRAKOW
AM SEE 40 miles
Another national park awaits, the Nossentiner Heath. The landscape changes
once again into forestland. Overnight near Krakow am See.
Day 6 KRAKOW AM SEE -
ROSTOCK 25 miles
You bike to Güstrow, a well-restored middle-age town with its old town
center surrounded by walls and towers. There is a lot to see, the gothic
cathedral and the renaissance castle. But also a stroll through the narrow
streets with restaurants and cafes can be recommended. Take the train to
Rostock (not included) and spend the night in this old time important
trade town on the Baltic Sea.
Day 7 ROSTOCK -
NYKOBING (DENMARK) 20 miles
You leave Germany by ferry from Rostock (included). But as the
harbor is enormous, suggest you take the train to the ferry terminal (not
included). The ferry journey to Denmark is two hours. In Gedser you ride
along the east side of the peninsular. The beach along the dike is most
probably the best in Denmark. Go thought the holiday resort Marielyst to
Nykøbing, a merchant town with a busy city center. Overnight in the
outskirts of Nykøbing.
Day 8 NYKOBING -
STEGE 45 miles
A day to look forward to! Quiet biking along the east coast of
Falster, through forest to Stubbekøbing. Take the small ferry across the
sound to the next island Bogø (included). Then across the dike to the
island Møn. Your hotel is located on a golf course, just outside the main
town Stege.
Day 9 STEGE 20 miles
We suggest a day trip to see one of the most important nature
attractions in Denmark, the cliffs of Møn. The white chalk cliffs rising
from the turquoise-green sea are quite an impressive sight. If you walk
all the way down to the sea you can reward yourself with a swim at the
beach. The bike ride back takes you through quiet villages with lots of
thatched houses. If you are interested in old churches, Møn has several
churches famous for old frescoes, i.e. Elmelunde and Keldby churches.
Day 10 STEGE - KOGE
40 miles
You leave Møn by going across the bridge to the island Sealand.
The route takes you through the old market town Præstø with its
well-preserved old city center. Then along the coast to the holiday areas
at Fakse Ladeplads and Rødvig. In Rødvig you should take time for a walk
in the hectic marina and enjoy the view to the cliffs of Stevns. Then take
the local train to Køge (not included) or if you still have more energy
you can bike to the cliffs and all the way in to Køge (25 miles).
Day 11 KOGE -
COPENHAGEN 30 miles
Køge is an old town with lots of old town houses situated around
the market square. Enjoy the town on foot and do some shopping before
continuing to Copenhagen. You could also spend all day here and take the
train into Copenhagen. The route takes you through quiet suburbs and
further north on a separate coastal path along the beach. In Ishøj, you
should take a break and enjoy the modern art museum Arken on the beach
side. The ride into Copenhagen center is safe, always on bike paths. Your
Copenhagen hotel is very well located, within walking distance to the most
important sights.
Day 12 COPENHAGEN
Your arrangements end today after breakfast.
